On July 4th a new gaming league, the world wide federation of gaming, will launch. You can tell by their slogan, built by games, backed by games, that their CEO has no fucking clue about games and gamers. Throw in the fact that every time he says a gaming “buzz word” he smiles like when George W. Bush doesn’t butcher a word longer than three syllables.
Maybe this douche bag doesn’t realize it yet but there have been suaver, older, and more douche baggy people who have tried the same thing … and failed spectacularly. Maybe they didn’t hear about the Championshit Gaming Series?
This kind of stuff pisses me off. First off, what in god’s name does this walking corpse know about gaming? I bet the closest he’s gotten to progaming is watching his grandson get spanked on xbox live. He even admits that the last game he played was pong, but hey I guess a music exec doesn’t need to have any hands on experience with the league he’s running. We all know how successful that’s been in the past.
Then to top it off he rattles off the names of some pro fighting game players, like that is supposed to impress us. It’s great that a new company is embracing professional gaming but all this interview leaves me with is one big WTF. I think a monkey slinging shit could come up with a more coherent business plan. Downloadable music and games? DOES THIS GUY KNOW THE DEMOGRAPHIC HE IS TALKING TO? Oh and I distinctly remember him saying that the players won’t know what games they’re playing up until match time. WCG Ultimate gamer wasn’t a total fucking failure, good call on imitating that.
At best this project is going to rest on the shoulders of being a news and tournament site … with “pros” signed to compete in their events to draw traffic. They’re going to be so proud that they had a draft and imitated the N-F-L that they won’t second guess themselves. I see this being even less successful than the CGS.
Coin Op TV interviewed the WWFOG CEO Michael A. Winchester (the A is for asshole) about the upcoming league. Here’s the video so you can make the call:

Doesn’t anyone research and reference history these days? I completely agree with everything you say and find it hard to believe that yet another org is going to piss away money that could be spent helping the already struggling (yet respected) orgs in the status quo.
I really, really, really just don’t get it…

It’s nice to see someone making a move in the industry. But honestly, now is not the time for anything of the sort. What he truly needs to understand as the professional gaming *IS*NOT* the NFL. I absolutely love and respect what the NFL does and is doing but you have to just be a simple person to not understand that cheerleaders next to people playing Yu-Gi-Oh will not only be dumb in general, but in my opinion will only serve to demerit the validity of the sport. Rule sets are different for each and every game, “four quarters with a half time” doesn’t really work for Counter-Strike or Street Fighter 4. Not understanding something as basic as the differences in game format will send WWFOG to it’s doom faster than the CGS.

All I can really say is get the card games out, they belong in their own category. I’ll have to go with h4rvey on this one.
